Why Your Home Should Reflect You (Not Pinterest)

You’ve pinned 147 kitchens, saved reels of dreamy laundry rooms, and have an Instagram folder bursting with “home inspo.” But here’s the thing — when it comes time to make a decision for your space, it still doesn’t feel quite right. You’re not alone.

Inspiration is a beautiful starting point. But it’s not the final destination. Too often, we get so caught up in what’s trending or what looks “good” online that we forget to ask the most important question: Does this feel like me?

The Pinterest Problem

Don’t get me wrong — I love Pinterest. It’s a treasure trove of ideas and beautiful design moments. But it’s also a bit of a trap. Everything starts to look the same. Soft white shaker kitchens. Oak floors. Gold tapware. A sprig of eucalyptus, maybe a fancy candle.

It’s curated perfection, which makes it easy to think, “That’s what a good kitchen should look like.

So you pin it. Plan for it. Maybe even pay for it. But in the end… it doesn’t feel like you.

So, What’s Missing?

You.

Your personality. Your lifestyle. Your rituals, your memories, your quirks.

Designing your home is more than selecting finishes — it’s about translating you into a physical space. And that looks different for everyone.

Maybe you need open shelves to see everything at a glance. Maybe you love bold colour and want your kitchen to sing when you walk in. Maybe you bake with your kids every Sunday and need deeper drawers for flour bins. These aren’t just functional needs — they’re part of your story.

And your home should tell it.

What Authentic Design Really Looks Like

Authentic design isn’t about perfection — it’s about resonance. It’s about creating spaces that feel good because they make sense for your life.

Here’s what that might include:

  • Layouts that suit how you cook, clean, entertain or unwind.

  • Colours that soothe you, energise you, or make you smile.

  • Storage that actually works for your habits.

  • Materials that feel warm, grounding, and lived in (not just what’s popular this month).

It doesn’t need to be picture-perfect — it just needs to feel like home.

How to Start Tuning Into You

If you’re ready to ditch the cookie-cutter and design something you love, start here:

🌀 Reflective Prompts

  • How do I want to feel when I walk into this space?

  • What colours, textures, or materials am I consistently drawn to?

  • What are the things I do every day in this space? (And how could design support that better?)

  • What do I need more of — calm? Creativity? Energy? Flow?

These might sound simple, but the answers can shape every design decision you make — from the layout to the lighting to the little details.
